HHS Office of Minority Health Awards State and Local Grants to Help Reduce Health Disparities

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) today announced more than $3.5 million in demonstration grants to document and sustain disparity-reducing interventions in 12 communities across the United States.

The State/Tribal/Territorial Partnership Initiative to Document and Sustain Disparity-Reducing Interventions will support projects which demonstrate whether modifications to existing evidence-informed interventions for selected health issues significantly improve health outcomes for racial and ethnic minority and disadvantaged populations.

Each grantee will select two health areas on which to focus, one from each of the two groups listed below.

1. HIV, maternal mortality and morbidity, physical activity, or substance use disorder, and,
2. Nutrition, sickle cell disease and trait, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, lupus, or cancer prevention (i.e., addressing risk factors specifically for stomach, liver, or cervical cancer).

Grantees are expected to produce health disparities profiles and test interventions designed to improve health outcomes for their chosen areas.

'These demonstration grants are designed to help address health disparities across a wide variety of health areas where we see disparities for racial and ethnic minority and disadvantaged populations,' said RADM Felicia Collins, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Minority Health. 'This initiative will help organizations, in partnership with state and tribal governmental health agencies, test ways to adapt existing programs to improve the health of the communities they serve.'

The project period for each grant is September 30, 2020, to September 29, 2022.
